Tips for Safeguarding Your Immune System this Winter

But as autumn and winter roll around, your immune system may need a bit more support staying strong and fighting off common seasonal illnesses. Here are a few simple ways that you can stay healthy and avoid using all of your accumulated employee sick days this winter.

Make Water Your Best Friend

The importance of water cannot be overemphasized. Your body relies on water to clear out toxins and other “sludge” that can weigh you down and keep you feeling ill. Even more importantly, purified water helps white blood cells and other immune system elements reach their destinations and fight bacterial and viral intruders.  Many beverages like coffee, tea, and soda actually dehydrate the body, so plain and simple water is the best bet. Infuse with fruit if you need a flavor!

Put on Your Apron

Fast food and pre made dinner options sure are easy, but they aren’t great for your body. Steer clear of processed meats, fried foods, baked foods, and artificial sweeteners since they can suppress the immune system and drown your body in what can only be described as a toxic sludge. The critical vitamins, nutrients, and essential fatty acids that your body needs to thrive can be found in whole foods like fresh fruits and veggies, whole grains, nuts, legumes, protein, and superfoods. For best results, cook your healthy foods with robust spices such as garlic, ginger, cayenne pepper, allspice, and turmeric.

Use a Probiotic

A full 80 percent of your immune system is controlled by your digestive system, and your digestive system relies upon healthy bacteria. On the days that you feel bloated and fatigued, chances are your gut bacteria is out of balance. A probiotic adds vital healthy bacteria back into your system so that your immune system can thrive.  You can select a probiotic from the store or eat fermented foods like raw sauerkraut and kombucha to get your fill. As a bonus, you’ll notice your stomach feeling better with less bloating as well!
