How to Prepare for Your Internist Appointment

annual examWhen you are sick it can be easy to get caught up in the hassle of trying to get a doctor’s appointment. But if you rush the process, you might not get as much out of the appointment as you really need. Before you head to see the internist, take a few moments to prepare yourself for the appointment.

Preparing for a Doctor’s Visit

Before you head to the doctor, you need to deal with some practical things. Make sure that the doctor accepts your insurance, and determine what your co-payment will be, if you have one. When you call to make your appointment, make sure to give the office information regarding the reason for your appointment – especially if it is something that requires immediate attention. If you haven’t seen the doctor before, be prepared to provide information about your medical history, and, if possible, bring past medical records with you. You should also bring with you a list of medications you are taking (including the dosage), including over-the-counter drugs.

When you arrive for your appointment, give the internist as much detail as you can about your symptoms and when they started. Be patient with your doctor as he or she asks questions to learn more, and try to maintain a positive and respectful attitude, even if you aren’t sure why the doctor is asking these things. Once your doctor makes a diagnosis and prescribes a treatment, ask questions to ensure that you fully understand the treatment – especially if it involves a new medication. You should also ask about follow-up recommendations to see if the doctor wants to see you back to check on your progress. If so, make your follow-up appointment before leaving the office, and write it down so you will remember.

Every visit to the doctor is different depending on the problem you are dealing with. The more time you take to prepare for the appointment, however, the more likely you are to get what you need from the doctor.
